Disassociation (2022)

At around the same time I created the self portrait, I wanted to peruse the same set of themes using different methods. These pieces were created within a year of each other.
In this instance I wanted to associate shape with disassociation. I always associated the organic collection of the self and memories similar to a wave system. Where over time the large body of the wave dissipates into smaller sections. During it's creation, I found myself associating the forms with different events and moments, some that were very vibrant and turbulent while others very distant. It was my goal to express these memories as faithfully as I could from the dense, jagged sharp edges to the soft, wispy almost invisible marks with small almost unrecognizable marks.
When it comes to memories and aspects of the self, some things are very adhesive while others move away very quickly. Overtime the self from several years ago is barely distinguishable from the one today.
I used the spacing within the polyptych and custom made a very granular white substance in order to represent the very tactile pieces that make the self. There are both light sculptural elements and markmaking elements within this piece that are being pushed in order to express these ideas. Some of the stronger inspirations behind the conceptualization of the piece would be both Designer Micheal Bierut's Lightyears piece (1999) and the black and white visual language in Omori. Pushing how the basic fundamental contrast of black and white into different contexts. Using seemingly simple attributes in order to illicit complex states of being.
