Flow (2020)

Material: Stencil & Spray-paint

Surface: Wood Panel

This piece shows the denouement of a motion with a hearse holding cargo, the cargo is flying out of the vehicle as it is spinning. The intent behind the piece was to experiment with very vibrant neon colours such as the lime green and the very bright orange as well as abnormal compositions and surfaces. Using stencils, not only was the car rendered but key lines as well, allowing the viewer to follow the motion from left to right. This piece was a primer to test out the potential of stencil art and some of the things that could be done with it. A major goal was to get the audience to read and feel motion within a piece despite it being a still image. Exploiting the form of the line, size, surface and space was crucial to this goal.

This was created not too long before I started self learning animation. Therefore the use of signifiers such as vibrant color, semiotics and precise/intentional mark making in order to illicit a specific movement for the viewer. In other words it was really a first attempt for me to make images move.
