Storyboarding (2021-2022)
Material: Colored Pencil, Graphite, Ink
Surface: Illustration Board
For the 2022 portfolio, I decided to commit to a 5 month gauntlet to create a solely technical animation to the best of my ability. The goal, to embark in a survey-like process and touch on as many aspects of the study of movement as possible. To push my beginner level skills even further as well as fully utilize the new workflow I recently learned. Opentoonz was the software I recently just picked up, and I wanted to create a work using that software.
I wanted to consider a couple of things. To focus on full body animation and choreography. In addition to effect work, which is one of my favorite parts of 2d animation. After the storyboard was complete, animating started on September 1st and stopped on the 1st of February. The story board was divided into six sections 2.5 weeks per section.
In retrospect, after completing the project, I underestimated the amount of time required to realize a story board of this magnitude. More importantly for my skill level at the time, the project was far too ambitious. However, I learned a lot and since then have gotten better with my work flow and planning. In the future, I want to up the quality of my work while reducing the actual run time of the video. I think it's more important to increase quality and take a multi pronged approach in all areas of production than to create a longer work. At this stage of my learning, mastering technique is far more important to me than creating an actual product.
